How table seating is calculated
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per guest for a comfortable meal, or 20 inches if you squeeze. On a rectangle, count both long sides and add one seat at each end when the table is at least 30 inches wide. On a round table, divide the circumference by the inches per guest and round down.

- Measure the tabletop. Length and width for a rectangle or oval, the diameter for a round or square table.
- Pick a spacing. 24 in for everyday dining; 20 in when the meal is short and plated.
- Apply the formula. A 36 × 72 in table: 2 × floor(72 ÷ 24) + 2 ends = 8 comfortable seats.
- Assign every seat. Use the seating chart maker once you know the count.
