Why do furniture stores and event planners give different numbers?
They plan different meals. A dinner at home often has shared dishes, bread plates and time to linger, so furniture guides allow more room. Events often use plated service and simpler settings, so event guides fit more chairs around the same table.
Use the lower count when food is passed around the table, and the higher count only for short, plated meals.
Does the guest count change what you need to buy?
