What size rug for a living room?
Add at least 12 inches to the sofa’s length, 6 inches for each end, and choose a rug deep enough to hold the front legs of the sofa and the seats facing it. Then check that a 12 to 18 inch border of floor remains to the walls.

The calculator assumes the front legs of facing seats sit 6 in onto the rug, so the rug’s depth is the distance between those front legs plus 12 in. For an 84 in sofa, a 6 × 9 ft rug runs 12 in past each end, an 8 × 10 ft rug 18 in.
| Sofa length | Shortest rug | 5 × 7.5 ft | 6 × 9 ft | 8 × 10 ft | 9 × 12 ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 76.5 in | 88.5 in | 6.75 in | 15.75 in | 21.75 in | 33.75 in |
| 84 in | 96 in | Too short | 12 in | 18 in | 30 in |
| 90 in | 102 in | Too short | 9 in | 15 in | 27 in |
| 104.5 in | 116.5 in | Too short | Too short | 7.75 in | 19.75 in |

What size rug for a dining table?
Allow at least 36 inches from each table edge to the edge of the rug, so chairs stay on the rug when guests pull them out. A 40 × 72 in table needs a rug of at least 9′ 4″ × 12′.
That is West Elm’s rule of thumb; Boutique Rugs adds three to four feet to each side of a round table. Round tables can sit on a round rug or a square-ish rectangle.
| Table | Rug at least | Smallest standard size |
|---|---|---|
| 48 in round (4 seats) | 10′ × 10′ | 10 ft round |
| 60 in round (6 seats) | 11′ × 11′ | 12 × 15 ft |
| 36 × 60 in (4 seats) | 9′ × 11′ | 9 × 12 ft |
| 40 × 72 in (6 seats) | 9′ 4″ × 12′ | 10 × 14 ft |
| 42 × 84 in (8 seats) | 9′ 6″ × 13′ | 10 × 14 ft |
The largest rug for your room
Subtract the border twice from each wall length. An 8 × 10 ft rug needs a 10 × 12 ft room with 12 in borders, or 11 × 13 ft with 18 in borders.
| Room | 12 in border | 18 in border |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 12 ft | 8 × 10 ft | 6 × 9 ft |
| 11 × 13 ft | 8 × 10 ft | 8 × 10 ft |
| 12 × 15 ft | 9′3″ × 13′ | 9 × 12 ft |
| 13 × 16 ft | 10 × 14 ft | 9′3″ × 13′ |
| 15 × 20 ft | 12 × 15 ft | 12 × 15 ft |
