A Thanksgiving place setting follows the basic American layout. The dinner plate sits in the center. Build each setting from the center out. Lay the placemat, center the plate, then add flatware so it is used from the outside in. Set the glasses last, so nobody reaches across them while you finish the table.

Where do the bread plate, wine glass and dessert spoon go?
Add them only when the meal needs them. In the Emily Post Institute's formal setting, the bread plate sits above the forks and the glasses stand above the knives in the order they will be used. No more than three of any utensil go on the table at once.
Sources differ on dessert flatware. Some place the dessert fork and spoon across the top of the plate; formal service often brings them out with dessert instead. At a family Thanksgiving either choice works, as long as every place matches.
How tall can a Thanksgiving centerpiece be?
Keep the centerpiece below the eye line of seated guests, so people can see and talk across the table. A long, low arrangement down the middle also leaves room to pass the serving dishes.
