How big should a living-room rug be?
Big enough to hold the seating group together. Ruggable's size guide and the designers quoted by Livingetc share the basic rule: at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, the rug runs past the furniture on each side and a border of bare floor shows around the edge.
The most common living-room sizes are 8 by 10 feet and 9 by 12 feet. Smaller rugs work in small rooms where the furniture is sized down with them.
What size rug fits a 76-, 84-, 90- or 104-inch sofa?
Add at least 12 inches to the sofa's length, 6 inches for each end, to find the shortest rug that works. A 76.5-inch sofa needs a rug at least 88.5 inches long, an 84-inch sofa at least 96 inches, a 90-inch sofa at least 102 inches and a 104.5-inch sectional at least 116.5 inches.

Should all the furniture legs be on the rug?
Three layouts work. All legs on the rug suits a large rug and a seating group that floats in the room. Front legs on suits a sofa against a wall. No legs on works only with a small rug centered under the coffee table in a small room.
Designers disagree about the middle option. One designer quoted by Livingetc dislikes front-legs-only layouts and prefers a rug large enough for every leg, so measure for the larger rug if the room allows it.
How much floor should show around a living-room rug?
Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Ruggable allows 18 to 36 inches around its largest rugs in bigger rooms.
The border sets the largest rug a room can take. With 12-inch borders, an 8-by-10-foot rug needs a room of at least 10 by 12 feet; with 18-inch borders, 11 by 13 feet.
